Our audiologgers capture granular details about a caribou’s life, which can be dissected from the movement data (the GPS collar and the accelerometer) and heard on the audio. Below are a few examples from one caribou collared in 2024 who later calved on the Bluenose East calving grounds.

Calving event

We confirm calving events based on the first appearance of maternal behavior. Listen to the audio clip below to hear caribou B-S licking her calf for the first time.
Disturbance event
June 14, 2025
We can tell something disturbed the herd of caribou based on the collared caribou calling repeatedly for her calf between running. It was unclear if the calf had been predated during this event, but luckily we hear it suckling shortly after.
